How to open HEIC photos on Windows

Windows support depends on the installed image components and the app opening the photo. Try these steps, or convert a copy to JPG when an app cannot open HEIC.

1. Check the image and the app

Confirm the file ends in .heic or .heif and try opening it with the Windows Photos app. Available support can vary by Windows version and installed components.

2. Install a compatible image extension

If Photos asks for an extension, use the Microsoft Store link provided in that prompt and follow Microsoft's installation instructions. Only install extensions from a source you trust.

3. Convert a copy to JPG if needed

If the destination app still cannot open HEIC, convert a copy to JPG. JPG works in more apps, but it does not preserve transparency and uses lossy compression. Keep the original HEIC if you want to retain the original file.

Keep the original photo

A format conversion creates a new file and cannot add detail missing from the source. Save the downloaded JPG separately instead of replacing your original HEIC photo.
